It stand for Certified Public Accountant. Similar to the UK and Canadian Chartered Accountant. In the U.S. we have to first get a Masters with a concentration in Accounting and Tax and then have to pass a 3 day national examination. Some States also require a 2 year "internship" as well. Then there's the 40 hours of yearly CPE (Continuing Professional Education).

My wife though calls it "Constant Pain in the Ass". I bet that made your list as well.
