My
HPV expert at Moffitt says:
Recall that there are over 100 different types of
HPV viruses. Around 40 infect the mucosal surfaces of the anogenital tract and the oral, oropharynx. There are as many different
HPV types that infect the cutaneous skin. My research group and others are investigating whether these types of
HPV cause skin cancer specifically non-melanoma skin cancer. The published literature to date suggest that YES, certain types of these so called cutaneous
HPV types are indeed associated with non-melanoma skin cancer. Until we see more published studies confirming this association we say that
HPV possibly causes skin cancer.
