My Mom is a week out of radiation. She is suffering miserably, as I have stated before, from the thick saliva that builds in her throat. She hasn't slept for days. She has tried sleeping in her recliner, propping herself up in bed, but once she starts to sleep, she begins to gag & has to constantly hack the saliva up. At this point, she is not swallowing anything. We are afraid of giving her a sleep aid for fear she will choke. I know alot of you have dealt with this awfuly symptom, but it continues to get worse and I am trying desperately to find some way to help her sleep. Any suggestions would be most appreciated.

That's what they did for my mother. She didn't get a normal good nights' rest without interruption, but definately did sleep. Unfortunately, they couldn't give her major sleep aids because of the fear of choking and aspiration. But she slept intermittently, and that's better than no sleep at all. I remember how hard it was watching her try to get comfortable, moving in her recliner, and feeling so helpless. I know how frustrating it is. Also, try lavender candles and scents in the room. That can also have a relaxing effect. It's worth a try! Good luck..... Brooke
Hope is the one thing no one can take away from you!!!

I tended to nap for short periods of time most of the day and night. If I slept for an entire hour straight it was a major accomplishment. I had to sleep somewhat sitting up so that I wouldn't choke. I was in the hospital for a long time and used a hospital bed at home. I was thrilled the day that I "graduated" back to my own bed although still propped up with lots of pillows. Now I sleep lying flat although the dry mouth tends to wake me after a few hours. The process from where I started to where I am now took several months. Even though I couldn't swallow I did suck on a lot of ice chips (tiny amounts at a time) to keep my mouth moist. I also rinsed with a mild saltwater. ilene
