The paper got in lots of trouble, but the controversy is getting the word out. The link was featured on AOL today. You can find the article and a video from the local news by going to the Huffington Post site and searching on University of North Florida Oral Sex.

I would find the person responsible for choosing the photo and give them a job because that person "gets" how to grab attention which is key in publishing and marketing. Let's face it, cancer is a word that you bring up that most people will just chalk up as a scare tactic. Our society is desensititized (sp) and even when there is alarming news most people will miss it due to being constantly bombarded by such messages. A quick example is the dentist in Elizabeths interview not knowing the facts about the #1 cause of OC..and that person "should" know. How many people will read that article now because of an "offensive" photo? More then without it I'll wager.

Aren't we as a society just ridiculous sometimes? Facebook can allow video posts of teenage girls beating the hell out of another girl that goes on for 10 minutes and they can allow video of gruesome dog fights and on and on but they think they must morally take down a picture of something that has been done (and will continue to be done) for 1000's of years.

Sometimes you have to shock people to get them to see what's right before their eyes. I agree with Eric that more people will read the article (not just look at the pic) because of the "offensive" photo (actually very "tastefully" done). Now someone needs to raise awareness for the middle school crowd and the parents who think they are keeping their children "chaste" by not discussing oral sex and opting to keep their kids out of sex education classes.

You have to do, what you have to do, to get the job done. By the by, as usual OCF reported this story earlier.... for those that follow our news feed. http://oralcancernews.org/wp/facebook-deems-unf-paper-cover-photo-a-violation/

I have grandchildren nearing puberty (3 boys, 1 girl) and I know that whether or not children get sex education in school, they will get the info from each other and it may not always be accurate nor up-to-date regarding oral cancer and may not always be sensitive to one's family values. There seems to be an epidemic of oral sex in middle school children - with young girls thinking they are practicing "safe sex"! Thank you, Brian and OCF for always being on top of the latest in Oral Cancer.

I am a (just retired - yea!) library director and we caught a teenaged couple in the mens' room. (How romantic)and the girl said that they weren't having sex. My staff member who was on duty that night didn't actually witness it, but she could hear them, and told me that while she didn't actually see it, she had been married 30 years, and she knew what it sounded like!
