It would have been more appropriate for him to have said that something like this should be done under sterile conditions in his office. I think he might have actually been trying to make a joke out of it. Not a good idea with someone that is in a state of panic.
I'm sure you will be fine until Thursday, but if you notice any changes in the looks of the skin around the screw, you should given him a call and ask to be seen sooner.
