I want to wait hear what the dentist has to say before I comment. It could be that taking care of dental infection will put you in good order fairly quickly. Be sure to ask for an oral cancer screening.
If you have a university with a dental school nearby, you may be able to get future problems attended to at low cost at the student clinic if you don't have dental insurance.
