Update: My dad's trach should come out in a week or so. He developed a infection in his lungs that caused the swollen vocal cords. Be aware everyone, his ENT claims this is very common. So, if you think anything feels a little funny in that area run don't walk to the er. As for the food issue. My dad had good luck with french toast from Trader Joes (in the freezer dept) with losts of syrup. Just make sure you cook in microwave not toaster. His speech therapist had him eating open face sandwiches on whole wheat bread (I guess it is easier to swallow than white bread).He seems to have gotten most of his taste back.
