Joined: May 2007 Posts: 666 | Is there any good information linking OC with tongue piercing etc. (positive or negative).
To me it seems that because of possible irritation this "should" enhance infections etc and therefore should be if not causing it at least giving it a leg up.
My dentist tells his patients that they are at higher risk for OC. (if possible I like to give him some more ammunition). I confess I am a bit biased, I cannot wrap my mind around why anyone would screw around with their tongue unless they have to.

Ive wondered that same thing. With so many young people piercing their tongues and lips it only makes sense. The trauma would seem to push their risk of OC higher. Havent seen anything documented about it.

Joined: Sep 2008 Posts: 130 | The kids tell me that there is a "practical" use. That practical use does infact increase your chances of oral cancer. (wink, wink) I can't stand the sight of the things. To me "facial" piercings remind me of the tags on the ears of animals. I tell my childern that what they do is they find the "ugly" people and tag them! And tongue rings make me want to gage.
40 yr old. Stage IV SCC found left tonsil. PET/CT shows cancer on base of tongue, floor of mouth, lymph nodes on both sides. HPV 16 pos. 6 weeks of cisplatin, 43 days of radiation. 73gy on each side.

David R. 65 yr old male non-smoker, light drinker, stage 3 or 4, depending on which doc you ask, scc rt. tonsil, 2 nodes, 7 weeks radiation and chemo. No surgery. Teatment ended 3/20/08. PET scan 8/08 showed no cancer.
And now, as of oct, 2010, caregiver to wife, Linda, with breast cancer.
May, 2013, Linda diagnosed with stage 3 ovarian cancer. Enuf already.

Since posting this. UPMC, Pittsburgh, Oct 2011 until Jan. I averaged about 2 to 3 surgeries a week there. w Can't have jaw made as bone is deteroriating steaily that is left in jaw. Mersa is to blame. Feeding tube . Had trach for 4mos. Got it out April.

Yes. Cancer... nothing to support that. He would have to be one of those that believes that chronic irritation can cause cancer, which the evidence is very weak on.

Joined: Jan 2009 Posts: 1,844 | Each generation expresses themselves differently and yes the tongue piercings do have their benefits, for those that don't know or are slow on the uptake (like me) the tongue piercings are for enhancing oral sex. Men, now more then ever, are bombarded by being the "sensative" type and so much pressure to be the greatest lovers in the world...to a wicked end I think. So I don't believe it's what they are putting in their mouths as what they are doing with their mouths that is the concern. Let's face it most people think just using a condom is safe sex...it's hard to be seen as a sex god with a dental dam or packin a roll of plastic wrap. I personally wouldn't be surprised if this was the reason I developed OC even though I was HPV neg...I guess it sure beat smoking in the fun factor but if I knew then what I know now, I'd have bought stock in Saran. sorry if I offended anyone Eric
