I would like to go to an acupunturist but I don't know how to evaluation them. We have a lot in this area. What questions do you ask? Is there a certification?

Thanks
Sandy

I tyhnk there is a test they have to take plus some schooloing involved too . I read in the Legion magazine the the military is mking it a requirment that their Drs take courses in acupuncture now.

Since posting this. UPMC, Pittsburgh, Oct 2011 until Jan. I averaged about 2 to 3 surgeries a week there. w Can't have jaw made as bone is deteroriating steaily that is left in jaw. Mersa is to blame. Feeding tube . Had trach for 4mos. Got it out April.

Anderson CCC in Texas has been doing studies using acupuncture to increase salivary flow. They've been very positive. Personally, I want to do it for many reasons, not just that.

Thanks
Sandyst

Sandy

My prothodontist has seen mixed results with accupuncture for increased saliva. He only recommends a dentist out in Siver Spring, so I did not feel like the commute. If you are interested, let me know and I can contact him for the name,

Sandy,

I think there is one in MD, maybe associated with Johns Hopkins, that is supposed to have excellent results. I unfortunately don't know his name. I ran into several of his patients who had successful treatment when I went for the interview in Philadelphia for the TV segment they were going to do on H&N cancer. I suspect he may have come to HUP to do several patients. If you can get the name of lady that runs the Phila chapter of SPOHNC that meets at Penn Tower Hotel, I think she had it done.

Take care,
Eileen

Sandy,
Post Tx acupuncture for xerostomia has been pioneered for about a decade now at the Naval Medical Center here in San Diego.

If you google "xerostomia and Naval Medical center" you will get a lot of info.

I think all the H&N patients in my support group who are treated at the Naval Medical Center (referred to as Balboa Naval Medical) get acupuncture as part of their post Tx follow-up.

Several other area cancer centers seem to be starting to offer this.

If you want info, PM me and I will ask the head of our support group to contact you by email. She is a 10 year survivor who receives (or received) acupuncture for her dry mouth.

There are at least four currently active in the support group who are receiving acupuncture (or have received it) and Val can give you all those details.

There was a big discussion at our last month's meeting about needle placement, but I really didn't pay it much attention - ears, fingers .....?? sorry!
