My dad has a stomach tube and was told nothing to drink/eat while he has it. He has been drinking water due to the loss of saliva /dryness anyhow. The problem is he has now stated he wants to have some dr pepper. Along with the stage 4 oral cancer (he has made it 13 yrs) he has diabetes, parkinsons, bells palsy. Please let me know. Thankyou

Hi takas,

Do you mean a PEG tube? Who told him not to eat or drink with the tube? Would he be able to drink Dr. Pepper without the tube?

I will try to help with your question. The info you posted if very limited. Who told him not to eat or drink by mouth? You really should question the reason they said no eating or drinking. If your father has whats called a PEG tube, then he should be able to eat and drink if he is capable of swallowing. There must be a reason he was told not to. Before you give him food or liquids, call or go to the doctor. Ask them to be more specific about that and you want to understand why he cant eat and drink. If you are to care for your father then you must be made aware of his limitations and understand them to be able to help him.

Sorry if I wasnt much help. We are just patients and their caregivers here and can only answer things from what we have experienced.

Don't confuse PEG with radiation with PEG for other reasons, like constricted throat -- I too am under warning to NOT drink anything -- Has nothing to do with the PEG, per se, and everything to do with my inability to swallow, the danger of aspiration and the subsequent possibility of pneumonia.

I mentioned on my last followup visit that plain or saline water will now go down my throat if it let it because it is thin compared to my secretions, and I was again cautioned not to be swallowing until cleared by swallowing tests (which I am a long way from getting).

Takas, tell your father to stifle the urge -- He really doesn't need pneumonia -- He can try some down the PEG and maybe burp up some taste! <g>.
