It said that HPV causes at least 20,000 cases of cancer per year. That sounds awfully low to me, knowing the figures from OC. Is there any chance we could get a seperate topic heading for news articles? I know on the main site they are posted, but this would be for ones that dont get posted like this one. Ive posted links to several articles and it would be nice to keep them all together.

Since posting this. UPMC, Pittsburgh, Oct 2011 until Jan. I averaged about 2 to 3 surgeries a week there. w Can't have jaw made as bone is deteroriating steaily that is left in jaw. Mersa is to blame. Feeding tube . Had trach for 4mos. Got it out April.

For sure with all the ones we sort through we can easily miss a good one. Never hesitate to offer up what you think is good information.

I thought that Merck was also going to market Gardasil as a preventive for OC, but according to the linked article above, they are not testing it for that purpose.
Guess I was wrong.

Retired Dentist, 59 years old at diagnosis. SCC of the left lateral border of the tongue (Stage I). Partial glossectomy and 30 nodes removed, 4/6/05. Nodes all clear. No chemo no radiation 18 year survivor.

Joined: May 2008 Posts: 551 | Jim, My understanding is that after age 26, its assumed to be too late, you've most likely already been exposed to HPV and vaccinating would be closing the barn door after proverbial horse has left the barn. Merck has tried to get approval for older people, but so far has not been successful.

The HPV link to OC is new in comparison to the other known cancers and problems it causes, some which have been known for decades. It is on their radar, but getting new approvals through the FDA is a path navigated slowly. Having owned a class 3 FDA approved device manufacturing company, I can assure you that what is obvious isn't what they want, it is what you have documentation to prove. Clearly the vaccine prevents persistent HPV16 infections, and that has been PROVEN in cervical. While an undisputed biological obvious, they have to prove that it does the same thing in the oral environment even though the effects of the vaccine are known to be systemic.This is the FDA, and logic doesn't cover your ass if you are approving things. It only works on people that have not yet been exposed.
