Joined: Feb 2008 Posts: 341 | Dan is now 9 weeks post-treatment and doing great in almost all recovery areas. The dry-mouth is of course an issue, but we assume will be forever. The main symptom now is his tounge. He said anything that is the least bit hard hurts it - his examples were chips, little debbie oatmal pie... He wanted me to see if you guys had this issue and how long it lasted.

Joined: Apr 2007 Posts: 27 | My tongue became very sensitive very soon after treatment ended. I had trouble moving it when I needed to talk a lot and I had to be very careful of what I ate because of a burning sensation. It is a lot better now, a year post treatment. I have no problems with moving it for speech and the burning sensation is minimal. I can eat tomatoes and citrus. I still find softer foods much easier to eat, chips, bread, green salads, meat, and chicken are still in the future.
Of course everyone recovers at a different rate and my recovery is slower than that of many others.

Retired Dentist, 59 years old at diagnosis. SCC of the left lateral border of the tongue (Stage I). Partial glossectomy and 30 nodes removed, 4/6/05. Nodes all clear. No chemo no radiation 18 year survivor.

Dan is doing really good. The 'hard foods' take a long time to master. Im still limited to soft foods like soup, pudding, yogurt, scrambled eggs, pancakes, squash, and milkshakes. I can handle bread with lots of butter with very small bites. It takes a while to build up tolerance to eating anything that has texture.
