#68360 01-24-2008 04:25 PM | Joined: Sep 2007 Posts: 24 Member | OP Member Joined: Sep 2007 Posts: 24 | hello all, just an update on the laryngectomy on my dearest del. he went into the or, and they did some biopsies, and decided that the safest course was to not do any surgery today. they want to do a flap and partial glossectomy because the damned cancer was still there, in the primary site, base of tongue, where biopsies had been negative last month. i was in shock for a while, and sobbing and just a mess emotionally, but now i realise that necrosed skin isnt going to heal, so a flap is the safest course to go. so,they came out of the or without doing the case, and he's booked for next week with the head and neck and plastics team. . i'm very discouraged because of the news of more cancer, but he wants to do this, to have a chance at a cancer free life, and i must hope with him, and support him. but dear friends, i'm scared to death. this has already taken so much from del. he still has chronic pain from the spreading necrosis and tumor, and now he'll have issues post op with eating and possibly speaking. i must somehow keep it together for him. we have our daughter with us, and we're enjoying the "speaking" time we have left. so, thank you all for your prayers, keep keep us in your thoughts, i'll keep you posted. blessings, emma
wife to Del,dx.4/07 BOT SCC t3n3m0 3rounds chemo (5fu,cisplat,taxotere,erbitux)35 IMRT tx.with weekly erbitux.finished 9/07. 12/07 biopsies +,surgery not an option.returned to palliative chemo 2/08. 6 tx.of cisplatin/taxotere,methotrexate 8 tx. He died Aug 20,2008, but lives always in my heart.

I am so sorry...this is so hard and it just keeps going and going, with no break and seemingly no positive news. I just can't imagine how sad and frustrated you must be but I am glad that you can come here to vent.
Thanks for keeping us posted..we are all praying for strength for you and Dell and some resolution to this nightmare.

I will have you both in my prayers and will look for updates from you.
Since posting this. UPMC, Pittsburgh, Oct 2011 until Jan. I averaged about 2 to 3 surgeries a week there. w Can't have jaw made as bone is deteroriating steaily that is left in jaw. Mersa is to blame. Feeding tube . Had trach for 4mos. Got it out April. --- Passed away 5/14/14, will be greatly missed by everyone here

Im so sorry for what your family is going thru right now. Being the caregiver is a very difficult task. Hang in there as best you can. I will keep your family in my prayers.

Age 58 at Dx, HPV16+ SCC, Stage IV BOT+2 nodes, non smoker, casual drinker, exercise nut, Cisplatin x 3 & concurrent IMRT x 35,(70 Gy), no surgery, no Peg, Tx at Moffitt over Aug 06. Jun 07, back to riding my bike 100 miles a wk. Now doing 12 Spin classes and 60 outdoor miles per wk. Nov 13 completed Hilly Century ride for Cancer, 104 miles, 1st Place in my age group. Apr 2014 & 15, Spun for 9 straight hrs to raise $$ for YMCA's Livestrong Program. Certified Spin Instructor Jun 2014.
