My husband finished radiation four weeks ago. His mouth is still terribly sore. He had thrush and was given Diflucan 100 mg daily nine days ago and it doesn't seem to have gotten rid of it. He was also give Nystatin mouth rinse two days ago and if anything it looks worse. He also has little blisters and what I would call scorched areas. His tongue and back of his throat has more of the white patches. needless to say eating or drinking anything is very painful.
How long do the mouth sores keep appearing? Any ideas? We are back from MD Anderson and feel at a loss of who to contact(what kind of doctor) now that we are here. Any suggetstion would be aprreciated.

I, too, had terrible mouth sores, and thrush. I am now 2 1/2 months post Tx and can finally say it is tolerable. To keep things under control I still use what was prescribed for me called "magic mouthwash". It has antibiotics, a numbing agent, benedryl, etc. all wrapped into one and seems to help me a lot.

I am still on the peg tube and can't eat anything yet except cream of wheat, so your husband is probably still right on track.

I used trays and still had mouth sores. I wraped over my teeth, and around gums with gauze. This seemed to help prevent further irritation. My big problem then was gagging and chocking while wrapping my mouth. The techs were very patient and understanding. The nurses would also spray my mouth with saline after each session. I would call the RO concerning these types of questions. Good luck.

If it is thrush than they will be white and you can't wipe them away. They hurt really bad. also there a rinse that you can get called uler ease from the pharmacy area. Magic mouth wash you get from your docter and its real good. also.

Magic Mouthwash or Magic Swizzle as it is called by some, is one part Kaopectate, one part Benadryl (diphenhydramine), and one part viscous lidocaine.

For me it did an ok job of numbing my mouth and while I didn't have thrush, I believe I remember the nurses telling me it helped with that as well.

Magic mouthwash is actually a combination of stuff that each Doc likes to use- different mixtures from diferent docs. There have been several concoctions posted on OCF. You could try a search to see if you can find some of those "recipes" Thrush is very hard to defeat and I would suggest that you are constantly talking to your Rad. Doc.or nurse to get different things to try.[read-bugging them] Finding ways to keep his mouth as clean as possible[very hard, I know] will help too.The longer it takes to get it cured, the harder it will be on your husband. Some of this could be thrush and some could be mucositis. I had both at the end of treatment. I pretty much stayed on dyflucan and the #1 mouthwash.(1 tsp. salt boiled in 1 quart of water. After it cools add 1 tsp. of baking soda Swish and gargle as often as possible). I would contact my doc's at MD and see if they can help you through a local doc or something.
