Hi all - for those on the board living in Ontario, I've found a yummy alternative to Boost or Ensure. Alot of people don't like them because there's an after taste. Well the Loblaws chain of grocery stores sells its own meal replacement drinks called Presidents Choice Ultra Shakes Plus Calories. The come in chocolate, vanilla and strawberry (i'm addicted to chocolate). They're lactose free, have 353 calories, 18 g of protein and 44 g of carbs. I add 2 Tablespoons of whipping cream for an additional 100 calories. For a special hi cal treat I add about 3 Tablespoons of Hagen Das chocolate ice cream --that adds up to about 500 calories right there!

Cathy: My problem, at this point in treatment, is everything I put into my mouth tastes like foil coated cardboard. Ensure and the many store brands are excellent and they are my primary source of nutrition, but, I have a gag reflex due to taste. It usually takes a while to get down a can of the slime. Although I have a gastroenterologist waiting in the wings with his "TUBE." I refuse to have the procedure, It's a psychological thing with me....

Darrell,
How many treatments do you have left? If there are a lot, I would recommend getting the PEG. Dan still has to use it 5 weeks post treatment due to the horrible burning and can't put anything in his mouth yet. He has used it for almost 3 months now, and would have been horribly nutrient deficient if not for it. I know there is controversy regarding it, but your body really needs enough nutrition during treatments...to get thru and for keeping the rest of your body and organs intact. Dan is hoping to eat soon, but the burning is so bad he might have thrush...they can't tell by looking so we got a prescription today to see if that helps.
Thanks,
Deb

Cathyl: Another good additive is Carnation Instant Breakfast in the same flavor as your Boost/Ensure stuff. It adds like 100 calories and both can be taken through a peg (tube in the stomach). While on that topic, Darrell, I had doubts about the peg also, but as I progressed down the 50 pounds (25% body weight)loss, I had it installed and stabilized my weight at that point. Think about it guy, you have to keep your nutrition up to fight this or you aren't being as aggressive in your treatment as you can be. Whats a little tube insert compared to all of the other stuff you are doing to defeat this little disease? Don't let it win because of a little reluctance to have a minor procedure performed. Get the peg, especially if you have many more treatments to go as things do get a little more difficult in the eating department.
