Does anyone have any suggestions to clear up sores in the mouth. Mike has some really bad mouth sores and the medication he was prescribed isn't making it any better, worse in fact. He is scheduled to have a big bag of Cisplatin on Monday and he says he won't get it unless his sores clear up first. Any advise would be appreciated. Thank you, Rene

If you will do a search of this site on 'mucositis' it will provide more information than I can post here. There are remedies.

Rene,

I don't have an answer to the sores because I didn't have them, I'm sure others will. I did have the pain in my throat that made swallowing very difficult and all the pain meds prescribed to me caused worse nausea which they couldn't control. I eventually stopped all meds just so what I managed to swallow, didn't come right back up.

The chemo most likely has nothing to do with the sores...they are a typical side effect of the rad Tx.

Please tell him it's important to continue with his Tx without interruption or change. He may only get one shot at killing his cancer and NOW is that time. We all know what he's going through because we've been there. While his Tx days may seem to last forever, in the scheme of things, this will be a short, but exteremly important period in his life.

Rene,

You can try baking soda. That will offer him temporary relief anyway. Sorry to hear he is having difficulty. I remember how upset I was when I had a bad reaction to Taxol. I had to skip a week. I thought it was the end of the world. Turned out it wasnt. Good luck.

Talk to you soon,

Rene,The radiation Doc should have 5 or 6 different things for Mike to try for the mouth sores. [also, does anyone know if they are thrush or what???]- the same thing doesn't work for everyone. Chemo should not produce mouth sores unless he gets into trouble with vomiting. Hopefully he will not stop his chemo and both of you need to insist on choices of mouth rinces to try plus good pain meds. This is a tough time Mike is going through. Hope you both can hang in there.
