There's a spotty history of past substance abuse but, w/it being such a major surgery, I hadn't thought about it until recently . . . and almost feel bad asking but, is this normal?
If so. . . let me apologize in advance to all of you who've gone through it. I just have no way of knowing.

My glossectomy and probably my neck dissection was less severe than your fiance's, but I know I was only taking prescription pain medication for a couple of weeks at most after the surgery. That doesn't mean him taking the meds for 4 weeks is out of normal range though.
Sorry I can't be of more help!

Morphine is nothing to play around with.

People vary greatly in their tolerance for pain. As long as he is seeing and communicating with his docs on a regular basis, they should ensure that he gets the amount and level of different types of pain meds necessary. Drugs for moderate pain, drugs for breakthrough pain. If you do a search on the boards for breakthough pain, you will find some realy good postings from Gary and others that are good guidelines for what is normal and the variety of drugs available for different levels of discomfort.
