Angie, when I began treatment my face mask was so tight that I was a bundle of nerves and anxiety. When I was finished, I would have "tennis racket" marks all over my face for 15 minutes after treatment ended, if not longer. It didn't take long for it to loosen up as I lost weight. Have you told the staff that it is uncomfortably tight? It needs to be tight for the radiation beams to go to the correct area but maybe it's to tight, can't hurt to ask.

SCC Left Mandible. Jaw replaced with bone from leg. Neck disection, 37 radiation treatments. Recurrence 8-28-07, stage 2, tongue. One third of tongue removed 10-4-07. 5-23-08 chemo started for tumor behind swallowing passage, Our good friend and much loved OCF member Minnie has been lost to the disease (RIP 10-29-08). We will all miss her greatly.

I am going through the "joy" of having my mask fitted today. Since I have sleep apnea, I am used to masks though, so hopefully will not have a problem with it. Hope yours can be loosened a little bit.

Given the look of my neck after the dissection, I'm not really worried about a few marks from the mask! ;-)

My mask was very tight at the start and had waffle marks on my face. As treatments went On and I lost weight is was loose by the end of the treatments.

Well, had the mask fitting, and it was much easier than I anticipated. Yeah, it was tight, but I could breathe and everyone was telling me what was happening as we went, so it wasn't bad at all.

The doctor stuck his head in while the IV was being started for the CT scan, and asked about the mask fitting and any anxiety, claustrophobia. He offered a relaxant if I needed it, so you might check with your doctor on that, if you feel it would help.

I took a photo, tinted it green and was a dead ringer for the "creature From The Blue Lagoon". It'll loosen up quickly once you start losing weight. Mine was very loose towards the end of Tx.

I took Zanax the entire time I was in treatment.

I'm trying to figure out how to make a "Chia Pet" out of it now...

I didn't take any meds but I did listen to loud music while the radiation was humming along. Nobody likes it but some can tolerate better. The first time will be the worst and you will look like you were hit in the face with a tennis racket but give it a chance before you ask for additional meds. That's just my opinion as I HATE to take pills.

The mask flat sucks. Mine was waaayyy too tight at first; they had to cut a hole for my nose (which was flattened out and suffocating me. It was so tight I couldn't open my mouth to breathe, either. It got easier after awhile, though. Like Gary, the Xanax helped me a lot, especially at first.
