Hello Everyone!
It's been 5 years since my fifth oral cancer surgery (palatectomy) and I am very thankful to have had no recurrences during that time. I only have 6 remaining teeth in my left side of the maxilla and those teeth are beginning to fail. This is a problem as those teeth are what anchor the obturator. I have been advised to consider zygomatic implants and I wondered if anyone here has undergone that procedure?

DX: SCC of right maxillary alveolar ridge, 9/2010.
Surgery 11/2010, removal of 4 teeth and gum.
Surgery 11/2012, removal of 3 teeth and gum.
IMRT 1/2013-2/2013
Surgery 1/2015 retromolar trigone resection; removal of 1 tooth and gum.
Surgery 10/2015 left modified radical neck dissection, inferior parotidectomy, external carotid artery resection.
Cetuximab based chemoradiation 64.8 Gy to resection bed.
Surgery 6/19/2018 Right inferior maxillectomy, bilateral low palate resection

Hi Karen, glad you are hanging in these days. I have not heard of zygomatic implants. It has ben quiet on the forum as of late. I hope someone way smarter than me sees this and responts

I know they attach to the cheekbone, not the jawbone. It might be an option. Other than that, I don't know much. I am going to investigate those at my next appointment with my oral surgeon in November.

Treatment completed 7/16/2013
PET Scan completed 10/08/13
Results discussed 10/11/13
NED - Free but am I
Next part of the journey?
1year PET 10/24/14 NED
Good reports now 10 years out.

Thanks James for responding. I saw my radiation oncologist to make sure the zygomatic bone had not received too much radiation during treatment. I will be going to a maxillofacial prosthodontist on Monday to speak with a specialist about the procedure. It is promising for patients with maxilla and palatal defects from surgery. I'll update here after the appointment.
