Joined: Nov 2009 Posts: 493 | I have been scheduled for a panendoscopy biopsy in the back of my throat to check something suspicious out. Has anyone here had one and what should I expect? My ENT who did my original surgery will be doing it, and explained things to me pretty well, but would like to hear from someone who has actually had one.
Female, nonsmoker, 70, diag. 5/09 after tongue biopsy: stage IV. Left hemi-gloss. and left selec. neck disec. 30 lymph nodes removed May 20. Over 7 weeks daily rads. with three chemo. PEG removed 12/4/09 Am eating mostly soft foods. Back to work 11/09 Retired 4/1/11. 7 clear scans! Port out 9/11. 2/13. It's back: base of tongue, very invasive
surgery involving lifestyle changes. 2/14: Now speaking w/Passey-Muir valve. Considering a swallow study. Grateful to be alive.

09/13 SCC, HPV 16, tonsillectomy, T2N0.
11/13 start rads, no chemo
12/13 taste gone, dry mouth,
02/14 hair slowly returning
05/14 taste the same, dry sinuses, irrigation helps.
01/15 food taste about 60% returned, dry sinuses are worse in winter.
12/20 no more sinus problems, taste pretty good

Joined: Jul 2012 Posts: 3,267 Likes: 4 | It's an examination, usually under general anesthesia, of the pharynx, larynx, trachea, esophagus with a rigid and flexible endoscope, sometimes with biopsies. I had several, one during direct biopsy as an outpatient, and another before a neck dissection. I had no ill effects, other than from the anesthesia, maybe a sore throat, if that, with the usual dietary, medicine restrictions, risks for any surgery, and someone has to pick you up or should, if its outpatient. It's also called a triple endoscope or triple scope, combining a Largynoscopy, esphoscopy, bronchoscopy.

Mine was done under general, wheeled into op room like any other real surgery with anesthesiologist and full crew. They go in and do "examine" but also do surgery and get samples which are sent off to biopsy. I do not think they wait to do any further surgery during this procedure. So in that sense it is diagnostic and an "exam".
You will be fine and do need someone to drive you home as you will be in recovery for a bit and feeling off a bit.

Joined: Jul 2012 Posts: 3,267 Likes: 4 | My ENT did a neck dissection after my triple scope, but that was pre-planned, and if recurrent cancer was found in the oropharynx, he was going to do the split lip method surgery. They also did a triple scope before I had a salivary stone removed from the duct during my first direct biopsy, but that was planned too. That did hurt since I had a plug, stitches in the floor of my mouth for a while.
