Cancer is scary. . . doctors arguing whether the margins were clear is scarier. The doctor is taking my case to both local tumor boards. Glad he is thorough, terrified that it is needed.

Just saying, this is scary.

My scans came back clear though, yay!

Oddly, the scary aggressive chemo doc says chemo won't be needed. I think they are debating what rads and whether to go back and do the neck thing that sounds so scary. It seems the pathologist did a lousy report. Don't they get that this stuff matters? Ack!

At least hanging out here has given me a better understanding of what they are not telling me. Learning to read between the lines.

There is debate with some what constitutes clear margins, I think I cm for tongue, and 5mm, maybe for others, but also other factors are taken into consideration like the histology of the tumor, dysplasia, and may be factoring radiation, it's extent, and others. Good luck.

Do you mean the neck dissection? That has got to be the most dreadful name for a procedure anyone could up with if they thought about it for a month of Sundays. However, if you read some of the posts on this matter, many members recover very well from the procedure.
Arguing doctors is also disconcerting, but on the positive side, you know that are paying attention to what would be the best for you in particular. You can obtain a second opinion even in mid-treatment.

Neck dissection is okay - compared to everything else its a piece of cake. Not kidding - been there done that and believe me -you get swelling, stitches, and drains for a few days. Pain is minimal they cut the nerves - you're numb usually afterwards. Also the swelling sticks around and therapy on the arm and shoulder is a should but compared to everything else VERY DOABLE if there is any question about it being in the nodes etc... I'd be there with bells on saying take them ALL particularly If its non HPV SCC. Hugs!

I just want to add to what has already been said. To me, my neck dissection and glossectomy was the easiest part of my treatment. I could have gone back to work in a month if that's all I had to have done. It was the radiation that really did a number on me.

I'm glad you are seeking a second opinion. It would be a good idea to have your pathology slides reviewed also. I learned the hard way that not all pathologist are created equal!
