Paul developed a massive blood clot in his upper right thigh. Diagnosed as deep vein thrombosis. Treatment choices were iv with heperin and be admitted or a lovenox injection with an Rx to self administer at home. With only 4 radiation treatments to go, if he was admitted it would have to be postponed. The oncologist recommended the lovenox route which we did.
Has anybody else experienced this? I'm really concerned about some of the clot breaking off and making it's way to the lungs. In my research I'm getting mixed opinions as to what is best. We're now down to 3 radiations to go.

Those are nothing to fool around with. I havent seen this problem come across the forum before so have no experience with this. Hang in there, the end is in sight with only 3 more rads left.

My husband developed extensive deep vein thrombosis in his left leg at the beginning of the fourth week of Tx, a couple of days after his second bag of Cisplatin. The MO said it was the chemo that caused the clotting. The third bag of Cisplatin was cancelled. John was doing the heparin injections daily, then he developed another clot in his right leg on the second last day of Rx. At the Thrombosis Clinic, the doctor increased the dose to two shots of Lovenox a day. According to the doctors, both cancer and chemo can contribute to the development of DVT. If your husband complains of shortness of breath or sudden sharp pain in the chest, then you will need to get him to emergency ASAP.
I am sorry this happened to your husband too. The Rx is tough enough without their having to deal with another potentially dangerous condition as well.

He actually was given a prescription for Lovenox with repeats for six months. The nurses at the radiation clinic did say that unfortunately this happens more often than people imagine.
On the positive side, after a few days, John's movements have greatly improved. At one point he was having trouble getting up from the chair and standing. But after five days of two daily injections, he is now moving without needing help.
