Joined: Sep 2012 Posts: 64 | My Medical Oncologist has scheduled my first post-radiation CT scan for 9 weeks after treatment. I read on another post that someone got his 4 weeks after treatment.
It's my understanding that, in general, CT scans should be limited as too many cause their own problems. If so, this would seem early for a scan. My ENT visually inspected the site three weeks ago and said that everything looked great so why the scan now?
How soon after treatment have others had their CT scans?

Joined: Nov 2009 Posts: 493 | I had a PET between two and three months after I completed treatments, then had CAT scans every six months until about a year ago. My last CT was last November. All three of my docs said that I didn't need to have one unless I started having problems. I am also seeing both oncologists and my ENT every 6 months now instead of every 3 months the way I was doing before.
Female, nonsmoker, 70, diag. 5/09 after tongue biopsy: stage IV. Left hemi-gloss. and left selec. neck disec. 30 lymph nodes removed May 20. Over 7 weeks daily rads. with three chemo. PEG removed 12/4/09 Am eating mostly soft foods. Back to work 11/09 Retired 4/1/11. 7 clear scans! Port out 9/11. 2/13. It's back: base of tongue, very invasive
surgery involving lifestyle changes. 2/14: Now speaking w/Passey-Muir valve. Considering a swallow study. Grateful to be alive.

Joined: Sep 2012 Posts: 145 | PET/CT scans have a very high false-positive rate if they are conducted 3 months within treatment (we learnt this the hard way).
The minimum we were advised was 10 weeks post-tx by our doctors.

Age 58 at Dx, HPV16+ SCC, Stage IV BOT+2 nodes, non smoker, casual drinker, exercise nut, Cisplatin x 3 & concurrent IMRT x 35,(70 Gy), no surgery, no Peg, Tx at Moffitt over Aug 06. Jun 07, back to riding my bike 100 miles a wk. Now doing 12 Spin classes and 60 outdoor miles per wk. Nov 13 completed Hilly Century ride for Cancer, 104 miles, 1st Place in my age group. Apr 2014 & 15, Spun for 9 straight hrs to raise $$ for YMCA's Livestrong Program. Certified Spin Instructor Jun 2014.

But my advice would be to ask for an MRI instead.
The Petscan at three months gives way way too many false positives and unnecessary anxiety and worry. The CT just does not give the detail the MRI does so has the opposite problem of perhaps missing something. Just my opinion based on my experiences and readings. Not surprisingly the doctors whose studies were funded by PETscan manufacturers claim they are just fine,

Seems like a CT scan now is fairly meaningless.
I see my Radiation Oncologist this coming Friday and I'll ask for her opinion (which will probably be very different).

Joined: Oct 2011 Posts: 805 | I agree with Charm. When the PET came back with a false positive for us they went to an MRI for a better picture of what was going on. Our ENT said he likes the MRI better because you end up there anyway.

Joined: Aug 2012 Posts: 56 | I am 4 wks post treatment and will have a PET scan about 3 mos out from the last tx. No CT scans are scheduled and am not sure why that would be appropriate. Second opinion is suggested. Good luck!
