We brought our dog Freya to the vet today - an eye infection and an issue with her mouth. The swelling in her soft palate he has been keeping an eye on for the past few months is larger, and it likely cancerous. We will be making an appointment with a veterinary oncologist for evaluation and biopsy. If it is cancerous, we may be able to buy her some quality time with surgery, or possibly a kinase inhibitor, Palladia, that has had some success in canine therapy. She is 15 and has a good life, and we will only go ahead with treatment if quality of life will be good.
Kind of ironic. You would think that one family member having oral cancer would be enough.

Oh, Maria!

I'm so sorry to hear about your dog. I swear, life can be so bizarre sometimes!

I know you will make the right decision for her, although it won't be easy.

Best wishes and please keep us posted.

Take care,
Kerii

Thanks, friends. I will update when we know something. Thank heavens, she doesn't know there is a problem.

I am so sorry for your puppy. I have 2 85 pound rescues and I can't imagine how I would feel in your shoes. At least at 15 he's outlived most of his friends.

So sorry, Maria. We had a cocker spaniel who had cancer on his lip when he was 13 years old. we had the tumor removed which gave him another 7 months with us. That's a pretty good bit of time in a dog's life and we were glad to be able to give it to him. He had a good quality of life during that time.

So sorry to hear about your puppy. My parents had a Golden Retriever Amber who developed oral cancer. She had two surgeries and they eventually had to have her put down when she was 7. They didn't want to put her through chemo or more surgery when she developed another tumor. It's so hard as they are such a part of the family. Good luck!

Thanks for all your kind words. I am also concerned because she keeps my dad (who is 96) engaged, and with a job in his life. We are lucky that Freya's original owner - my niece - is able to contribute to the cost of treatment.

I just spoke with the veterinary specialty oncology practice and we have an appointment for tomorrow at 11:00 - I am really glad we got one quickly smile

Well, good news so far. The swelling may only be an extension of an earlier (benign) lipoma, or fluid from a previous op. She will have an oral exam under anesthesia on Monday to confirm/biopsy/possibly drain fluid. Her chest x-ray showed no lung mets on the initial read, which is as good news for dogs as it is for humans. My dad and his doggy companion are down in the family room watching TV together.
