Patrick,

Cymbalta is an SNRI antidepressant so if you wanted to stay with that type of AD drug Effexor or Pristiq would be your other choices.

Prozac and Zoloft are SSRI ADs which are well known and effective.

MAOIs and tricyclic ADs generally have more side effects then SSRI and SNRI ADs. Your Dr or MO will have a better idea of what would work in your situation based on the other drugs you may be on.

Hope that helps.

Eric

Patrick, years before I had to deal with all this I was on Prozac for a couple of periods of time and felt it very effective. But I think the other posters are right, there are others equally so and in fact I think many docs regard Prozac as an old-line med at this point. A few years ago a neurologist prescribed Celexa, which seemed to work for me.

My advice would be to speak either with a neurologist or preferably a psychiatrist. I would think your cancer docs could recommend someone good.

Hang in there, buddy!

Patrick,
I was on Zoloft for a year, and then I was switched to Wellbutrin. I however prefer the Zoloft as it worked better for me as far as the depression, but I was having other side-effects that were concerning the Drs.

Patrick - It would be a good idea to always look at the fine print on the pill bottles for whatever cautions or side effects there might be. The doctors or pharmacists don't always tell you. My son was on Zoloft and was very depressed. When I heard that one of the side effects was possibly causing suicidal thoughts, I told my son and sure enough, it was right there on the pill bottle. He checked with his doctor who told him not to worry, that it was only in younger patients that the suicidal thoughts/tendencies occurred. I think, just finding out what may have been making him feel so down helped him to feel to better because he did brighten up a little after that.
