I took two rounds of difucon, nysatin, and these lozenges. Nothing seem to address this growing yuckiness in my mouth. Yesterday, the doc took a culture to send to the lab to make sure what I have is thrush and, if it is, to see if it is resistant to difucon. In the meantime the doc ordered a higher dose of difucon. Has anyone encountered this before? -Michelle

Even though your tonsils have been removed you do actually still have a set at the base of your tongue as well as a set of adnoids. Could this be a bacterial tonsilitis on remaining tonsil tissue. I only ask because of what you said in your message to me about room for your tongue and I've had tonsilitis soooo many times and on one occassion so bad that they were actually touching eachother (spanning from one side of my mouth to the other), Ask your doc. and ask about Fluconazole.

Yes, I encounter drug resistant thrush all the time in my area of work. We have seen over the years that Diflucan (fluconazole) can occasionally stop working with repeated bouts of thrush. I don't know how many times you have had it or how long previous cases have lasted but you might have a resistant type.
Your doctor has it perfectly under control and has increased the dose until the results of your swabs come back. He or she will then have a better idea of what type of thrush you have (or even if it IS thrush) and which medicine will work best. There are other options (itraconazole and ketaconazole) and I am sure he/she will get you back under control.
In the meantime, relax in the knowledge your doctor has everything sorted -the only frustration is the wait for the swab results to come back to determine which treatment to use.
best of luck, and let us know
Karen PS just a thought... if you are on any other medications or even natural rememdies, don't forget to tell your doctor as the "azole" medications DO interact with some other medicines which means you might need a higher dose.

Bob had it bad. When we went back and Bob still had it. They gave him Fluconazole(Diflucan)200mg once a day, along with that they had him take Metronidzole 250mg two tablets three times a day. He was wiping the thrush stuff out in 2 days by day 5 it was gone. Hope this helps.

The swab came back that I have thrush but not the kind that is resistant to Fluconazole/Difucan. I have now been on this med for eight days 5 ml. The dosage is 40mg/ml. I take it through the tube. I see my doc tomorrow. I can't believe the thrush has not gone away. It is pretty dismal. -Michelle

I hate that for you. Bob also has to put everything through a tube. All meds are in a pill form, I just take the pill and put it in 1 1/2 tablespoons of warm water. It dissolves and Bob puts it in his tube. The difference between the amount you get and what they gave him are quite different. I don't know if that is because of a weight difference, just in case it is Bob weighs 150 lbs. Good Luck

When I first finished treatment, I battled thrush for not quite 3 months off and on. I too didn't have a resistant type but the diflucan wouldn't work enough or if it did as soon as it got better, my script would run out and back the thrush came. I also used the nystatin in combination with the high dose diflucan. Finally, one day it started to work not sure what the difference was, I have an inclination that my saliva started to finally change. It was the thick, stringy gag me type of saliva and it finally started turning to a thinner consistency.
I know how aggravating it must be, I hated the constant taste of YUCK in my mouth and that it looks just plain GROSS.
Hope you don't have a long battle with it like me and get some relief soon!!
