Tulane Medical School will be having a screening here in New Orleans Monday at a prominent location at the MLK Day parade. It will be in the Tulane mobile health unit 10 to noon with 2 doctors, 2 nurses and myself who will be there with OCF brochures and butttons as a patient represntative. This is a first so there is no idea how many people will participate. Thanks to Megan for supplying the screening forms which TU will be using.
Next month I will be participating in an awareness campaign with the ENT team to meet with ministers of black churches to raise awareness and to encourage prevention and early detection and treatment. A nurse who formerly worked at "The Big C" (Charity Hospital which became nonfunctional after Hurricane Katrina) that patients would come in "smelling of death" because of lack of care.

Update from "The Big Easy"

Monday 30 people were screened and one was refered for treatment.
Brochuers were distributed to all at the exit and many people who chose not to be screened took them as well. Quite a few buttons were taken and people were putting them on.
The moblie clinic was on a wide neutral ground - median to the rest of the world - near the end of the MLK Day parade. The parade was disbanding around wrap up time. A longer stay, music and better signage would have attracted more people. It was a good dry run for later events.

Last night was a small meeting with representatives of the Tulane ENT clinic and other members of the faculty and staff and medical ministers from some of the black churches to discuss a new effort by Tulane and eventually all of the local medical schools to organize a community outreach for awareness and screenings. I prepared a packet with buttons, brochures, my card for reference, a card from Tulane Health Clinc, and a copy of the recent email from Megan about Oral Cancer month and week. Feb 13 is set for the churches to have individual programs. In the meantime a logo and name for the coallition is being worked on.
