Joined: May 2009 Posts: 1,412 | My ENT did not even take out the area that showed on the PET scan. He took out the huge ulcer that was at the back of my tongue. It was growing everyday and that is what had people worried. I am at home now, as it was an outpatient procedure. However, I did loose a good portion of my tongue, he did not take soo much that I can not talk. He wanted to make sure he got clear margins in case it was cancer. Now we begin to schedule to HBO chamber. I hate the gift of radiation. Why does it have to keep on giving?

I know what you mean about the radiation after effects - I'm still experiencing some and it'll be 3 YEARS in January. I'll be having a 6-month PET scan then too, and you guys will all be hearing from me and how nervous I'll be waiting for results. Joined: Jun 2007 Posts: 10,507 Likes: 7 | Wow, you have gotten so lucky!!!! Im so happy that you get to be home with your family for Christmas. HBO is no big deal. Its time consuming but also relaxing too. I would watch tv and take naps. Ask about getting tubes put in your ears first. Ive done alot of dives and know that its so much easier to do HBO if you have the tubes. My ENT did mine and they were still in 2 years later. When I did my last set of HBO treatments, I got a new set of tubes put in. It can be very painful and a struggle without the tubes. I think I probably did about 40 dives before I gave in and got the first set of tubes. Best wishes for a speedy and painless recovery. Wishing you the best Christmas with your little ones

Since posting this. UPMC, Pittsburgh, Oct 2011 until Jan. I averaged about 2 to 3 surgeries a week there. w Can't have jaw made as bone is deteroriating steaily that is left in jaw. Mersa is to blame. Feeding tube . Had trach for 4mos. Got it out April.

Marginal mandibulectomy 6/17/08 resulted in DX of Stage I SCC - gingiva (3 mm) right mandible, buccal side. Clear margins. Occasional social drinker. Smoked last cigarette in 1979. Clear pet: 12/08; 7/20/09. Yay!

Female, nonsmoker, 70, diag. 5/09 after tongue biopsy: stage IV. Left hemi-gloss. and left selec. neck disec. 30 lymph nodes removed May 20. Over 7 weeks daily rads. with three chemo. PEG removed 12/4/09 Am eating mostly soft foods. Back to work 11/09 Retired 4/1/11. 7 clear scans! Port out 9/11. 2/13. It's back: base of tongue, very invasive
surgery involving lifestyle changes. 2/14: Now speaking w/Passey-Muir valve. Considering a swallow study. Grateful to be alive.

Partial Glossectemy end March - margins not clear enough.
While waiting for resection - cancer returned,2 new cancerous lumps
Re-section End May & flap from cheek attatched. Margins clear.
Mid June - 4 teeth out
Mid July -32 Rads and 3 Cisplatin
6th Sept 10 Finished Treatment!!
