I am a 30 year old female smoker (in the process of stopping).
I have a white raised lesion on my bottom lip, with a small brown mole looking thing. I have in the last few weeks starting getting pain in my tongue and lips
I was referred after dentist said it looked abnormal. Once referred the dentist said straight away we will do a excisional biospy, at this i asked what she thought it was, she said she didnt know
My question here is what is the likelhood of it being cancer? and do they tell you if 'they think' it is or not
Any comments would be greatly appreacited thanks

I don't think a good doctor should be guessing about whether something is cancerous or not. The only 100% certain way to know is through a biopsy and study of the cells.
I can't speak to the chances that your lesion is cancerous, but statistically, I think the chances are low.
Kudos to your dentist for taking note and referring you to have it checked out!

I agree with margaret - it's not cancer until a biopsy identifies it. I know it's hard to wait - I'm waiting on a biopsy on my face right now in fact - but the answer will be conclusive when it comes. And the odds are definitely in your favor.

I tried to get out of the oral surgeon whether it looked like it was cancer. He would not commit, which I took as something bad. But it makes sense they dont want to comment.
