I don't think a good doctor should be guessing about whether something is cancerous or not. The only 100% certain way to know is through a biopsy and study of the cells.
I can't speak to the chances that your lesion is cancerous, but statistically, I think the chances are low.
Kudos to your dentist for taking note and referring you to have it checked out!
