We were told that it was because he was in such good shape that the installation cut through a lot of muscle. It was better after about a week. It also got him very depressed because it brought the whole experience out of 'just his mouth area' to his entire body. It was a lifesaver during the radiation/chemo though- and he is back on it now following surgery a week ago.
