 It is likely that they felt that there is bone loss around the two teeth.  Has Ron ever been diagnosed with periodontal disease?  Did they give you a reason why the 3rd tooth should be removed?  It would be a good idea to be sure that the teeth really need to be removed.

 Retired Dentist, 59 years old at diagnosis.  SCC of the left lateral border of the tongue (Stage I). Partial glossectomy and 30 nodes removed, 4/6/05.  Nodes all clear. No chemo no radiation 18 year survivor.
