HPV is a virus with well over a 100 different strains and at least 4 of those have been associated with cancers including Oral Cancer. HPV+ oral cancers are most often associated with the Base of Tongue and Tonsils and most have spread to the lymph nodes on one or both sides of the neck before the cancer is discovered.

While I'm certainly not an expert, I would assume that the cellular changes taking a normal cell to a cancerous one is similar when the HPV virus is the cause. Stay diligent but remember it's not cancer until it's been confirmed by a biopsy.
