I am from India, 36 Male, Married, have a 5 year daughter + wife pregnant, smoker, chewed pan (tobacco) for 1 year before the ulcer began, moderate alcoholic.
4 months back i had small painless ulcer in the mouth, 2 months ago went to see a doctor, mis-diagnosed it as candidacies and sent me to lab to give culture for fungal growth. The ulcer has grown with pain in the mean time and the report came after 6 weeks - negative. GP referred me to ENT who took punch biopsy of Cheek HPE and the results came 06/02/08 as right lower jaw/ cheek SCC, Buccal Mucosa, suggestion was T2(3)N1M0. Was referred to Oncologist and the surgery is scheduled on 06/11/08, plastic surgeon wants to perform Micro vascular surgery i.e. to take a piece of bone from my leg and adjust in the mouth.
I was browsing the net and found this forum which gives lot of info, support and help - thanks to Brian and all. Doctors here are so busy that they wont have time to give much information. They said I will be alright after the Surgery and I might need radiation post surgery. They haven't discussed to me about the post surgery complications, side effects of Radiation/ Chemo etc. They just say that due to my age factor I should recover soon.
I have lots of questions and please guide me:
I haven't seen many Buccal Mucosa SCC cases in the forum? Is this cancer a rare one? Any prognosis/ survival stats available?
Post surgery effects like Bone replacement compatibility? Face dis-disfigurement? Chewing problems?
Complications of removing lymph nodes?
Radiation/ Chemo effects?
It would be of great help if anyone can guide me to obtain more info or material. I will be in touch with the forum. Thanks to you all.
