To go back to the original question - yes, mouthwashes and medications containing alcohol, such as Nyquil, should be avoided. If fact I have read guidelines, from Hopkins I believe, even suggesting that drinking beverages too hot or too cold can also have a mutagenic effect. Anything that can irritate the squamous cells in the throat is suspect.
