Thanks everyone for the kind words, she's doing remarkably well. She was discharged from ICU after three days and transferred to a regular hospital room last Saturday. Once the swelling subsides and, with some luck, the trach and IV lines will be removed within several days, she'll transfer to an acute rehab center. Communication has been with a write and wipe board and a borrowed iPad that has a pretty cool communication/speaking app. I'm blown away by her positive attitude, I really am. I so hope this works out. I don't believe she's a candidate for any more radiation given her previous tx and chemo was really tough on her the last time around. Peripheral neuropathy developed and all sorts of other side effects were tough to handle. The docs did indicate, however, that some chemo might be necessary and they didn't exactly rule out radiation if we run into problems down the road. Crap. I don't know if that's a good idea given that she has ONJ too. I have to stop speculating and worrying, I almost drove myself crazy 10 years ago doing that. Thank you for allowing me a place to vent.


Mom's caregvr. DDS failed to dx 01/03. Dx Stg IV SCC 05/03. Induct. chemo, IMRT, 5FU, H, Iressa, Neck disect, radiation. Dad's caregvr. Dx 01/04 Ext. Stg SCLC. Mets to liver/bone 08/04. Died 11/12/04. Mom tongue CA dx 06/13, hemiglossectomy (80% removed) 08/13. Clean margins and nodes, but PNI. 6/15/15: Tongue CA at base of remnant tongue. Declined further tx; hospice.
Died 10/13/15. What a long and difficult journey.
