"Above & Beyond" Member (500+ posts) Joined: Sep 2009 Posts: 701 Likes: 1 | My husband's stoma closed within days without stitches but I do remember that he had to use sterile gauze to cover it when he wanted to speak. Otherwise he also had that whistling thing going on, too.
If you have to cough, using the gauze to put light pressure over the stoma will keep it from opening.
