False positives are very common. I had the lumps in my neck biopsied and were cancerous. Surgery scheduled on a Friday to take them out and have them tested. I insisted on a PET scan first. (done Thursday before) Thank God I did. Lab results showed cancer cells but they didn't know the primary. Next prcedure would have been a neck disection. PET results came in and my ENT wanted to talk. Scan showed 2 nodes (knew that from surgery) tonsil (BINGO primary no need for neck disection) and lung. ENT wanted me to see Radiation oncologist and wouldn't discuss any more with me. I told him I wasn't leaving his office without his best guess. I was told that for tonsil cancer to go to lung, this was very late stage and with chemo and radiation treatment I might have a year to 18 months.
Without treatment 6 months tops. He made an appointment the next day to see the RO but said he wanted me to go get the scan and bring it to the RO instead of having him go by the scan report.
when he saw it he looked very puzzled and asked if I had broken ribs. I told him I had a motorcycle accident a few years prior and broke 5 ribs and vertabrae. He told me I didn't have lung cancer and since the lymph nodes had been removed we just had to nuke the daylights out of my tonsil.Things looked great again (other than having cancer of course :)) I was on top of the world and ready for treatment glad to not be dying. I acually hugged and kissed the RO.
