This is very similar to the SETI@home and WorldCommunity Grid programs that I participate in. I would only imagine that they are using the same BIONIC software for this. BOINC is a program that lets you donate your idle computer time to science projects like SETI@home, Climateprediction.net, World Community Grid, and others.

In my experience with this type of software, there are no security problems as a direct result of using the software. If you computer is truly secure now you will be fine. They do disclose what type of information is collected about your computer configuration which is much better than what Micro$oft does.
