I had a small bump inside my right cheek/upper lip for about a year and noticed it had grown some. My dentist sent me to an oral surgeon to have it removed. The tumor ended up being sent to Brown University as the pathologists apparantly couldn't agree on what it was. I recieved the results on Friday while I was sick with the stomach flu. Not cool. It is polymorphous low level adenocarcenoma. I am told that it is quite rare, and has a good prognosis which I am very thankful for. I will be seeing an ENT next week and most likely will do another surgery to remove more of the surrounding tissue, which stinks since my mouth is finally healed after the last one. But it's ok, I want it ALL gone. This comes only a month after my dad was diagnosed with colon cancer, and an aunt just had a double mastectomy and both are going through chemo, so cancer is just gettting old. I have never smoked or chewed tobacco, drink alcohol in moderation, and am HPV negative. I'm hoping there are others on this board who have had the same and can share their experience.

It's always tough to hear those words "you've got cancer", especially as a parent of young children. Been there, done that glad to be on the other side.
Keep your chin up champ and welcome to OCF!

So sorry you have been diagnosed with cancer at a young age! It sounds like your family has more than its share of medical issues going on right now.
Your cancer is very rare but from its location, you are in the right place. You will go thru what we all do with painful mouth surgery and everything that goes along with it. Hopefully surgery will be the only treatment you will need and you can avoid radiation!.
Best wishes with everything! There are many suspected causes, and contributors factors for cancer, much of which unknown. The good thing is it's treatable, and has good prognosis, but it is still worrysome being diagnosed, and going though all these medical procedures, especially at a young age. Good luck with the ENT, and hopefully nothing else is needed.

I do have a follow up question for those that have had oral surgery, what does the site feel like after healing? Is it normal to be lumpy? I ask because where they took the tumor out has another lump, and I don't know if its scar tissue or it's trying to grow back already...? Of course I will know more when I meet with the ENT. Let me know if this question belongs in a different thread.

You could also have some inflammation there too. Try to keep busy so you dont worry. Mine was on my palate and had surgery to remove it a week and a half ago. Since they had to remove part of my hard and soft palate, I have an obturator, but received good news that the margins from the first resection were clear, no nerve involvement and bone in hard palate was clear, so I will not be having radiation or other treatment. I am 64, never smoked, drink socially and have been in excellent health. My oncologist said there aren't a lot of stats regarding similar cancers to mine, since it is somewhat rare. It appears that I had it for a long time and doctors all said it was nothing. Even though I appear to be getting a good result, i am wishing it had been diagnosed years ago and that I could have avoided a hole in the roof of my mouth and an obturator, but, oh well, I am still very lucky.
