About 4 days ago I started with some beef broth, then the next day I ate the noodles out of some campbell chicken noodle. I've had some beef soup and this morning I ate some egg whites. All the soup tastes way too salty the egg white taste "normal". I can see it'll take a bit to get off this tube, because everything for the most part tastes bad and it's hard to eat enough of it yet....but' it's a start!

Congratulations.

It's so hard to even look at food after treatment.

I'm 4+ months out and things are now tasting pretty good, although even now I drink a Boost Plus or two during the day to make sure I get enough calories.


SCC left tonsil, 2 lymph nodes, modified radical neck dissection, IMRT (both sides) completed 10/25/06, Erbitux and Cisplatin weekly, Ethyol daily

Way to go Bobd. You should be on track to be ready for this summers cookouts! I had surgery on Feb 13th and still can not eat anything solid by mouth. Thank God for the feeding tube. Can be pretty comical watching me try to eat just 1 small pasta shel with sauce. With 1/2 my tounge numb, I lose what ever I put in my mouth. Man, hope I'm ready for ribs by end of summer!!

Hi, Bob, if you are experimentling with canned soups, that "way too salty" taste is all of the sodium added to enhance the taste. You can make your own easily with canned low sodium beef or chicken broth [Swansons is good] and add noodles, pureed carrots, peas, etc. Also, dark meat chicken]from the leg and thigh] are very moist and easy to swallow. Cut into tiny pieces and add to your soup base. Trial and error is what it takes. Keep going. Amy in the Ozarks

I agree with Amy about the excessive amounts of sodium in a lot of canned soups. Fortunately there seem to be more of them that make a lower sodium variety, and I've started to look almost exclusively for those (in addition to making my own sometimes).

Bob,

Way to go! You will now find that eating will actually get easier with each passing day. Just keep it up so you can get rid of that tube! You might give oatmeal a try soon if in fact you care for it under normal circumstances.

Bob,
Since it appears that only the salty taste has returned, you may even find low sodium tastes salty also. I was at a point where even my home made chicken stock which had NO salt tasted salty right along with bottled water. Heh, but it beats cardboard which is where I was before I could taste salt again.

Try some cream of wheat made with water with hot milk and honey on it. How about some poached, scrambled or soft boiled eggs. I scramble eggs with 1 tablespoon heavy cream per egg and lots of butter. Makes for lots of calories. And there is no rule that you can't eat eggs for dinner. Eat whatever works. Next your on your way to rare lamb chops or a prime rib. Keep on swallowing. Gotta keep those muscles working.
