I'm pleased to announce that I am going to be doing some writing for the Foundation. Everything I write will be reviewed/approved by the medical community/scientists involved in this Foundation.
My current topic, which I have been researching extensively, is regarding complications from treatment - specifically Candida (thrush). I have read numerous posts from those members who have suffered from this problem, and I welcome any additional input/experiences on the topic.
While I am researching each topic extensively through a variety of medical sites and sources, nothing is more important than the information obtained from those who have experienced the topics upon which I will be writing. While medical professionals have tremendously important information to share, the experiences, ideas, input and personal stories of those who have gone through (or are currently going through) the experience cannot be overstated.
Thank you in advance for any help you can provide. Once again, I assure you that everything I write will go through a stringent approval process by the Foundation.
Best to all of you, Jackie

My dry mouth is not bad at all and my taste is very good. I ride my bike appx 100 miles a week, averaging 20 mph and I don't have one issue with dry mouth. I brush with Biotene toothpaste; chew Biotene gum; drink water all day; brush my tongue; eat healthy foods and even eat active yogurt daily, etc, yet I have had thrush twice since my Tx ended and I'm just wondering what's the connection I'm missing or is it just connected to what dry mouth issues I do have?
Oops, I forgot, Welcome
David

I had to take thrush medicine at the same time to counter it. However, since I've been taking Levaquin, I have not had the problem in my mouth, although the speech therapist says my prosthesis in my neck needs replacing so often because of thrush. I take nystain daily to counter this but it never clears it up completely.
Take care, Eileen

Again, I am not a doctor, nor do I play one on TV, however I do have an interesting account to give you;
My wife took a night job as a CNA in a nursing home so she could drive me across the state for TX during the day. As usual corporate America required that she take yet ANOTHER round of training and testing for the job that was well below her skill level.
What luck that was, during her training she came across materials covering the treatment of thrush in the elderly. The one point that seems to be missed by almost everyone is that dairy products are a HUGE no-no.
After weeks of thrush treatment that was just flat not working, I was forced, kicking and screaming to switch to soy milk. The thrush cleared right up and I switched back to whole milk. Been fine since.
Again this needs to be investigated and properly supported, however it worked for me.
Two years out and kicking like a mule!

Usually after taking an antibiotic. My diet is also very high in yogurt which should help to counter-balance the antibiotic.
When I get thrush it is a matter of hours from when I feel the first little tingle of something not being right in my mouth. Specifically, my tongue tingles a little and starts to ache. Within 2 hours it will be coated white and be very sore. My doctor has given me Mycelex tablets that dissolve in your mouth. They even work with someone who suffers from dry mouth. Its not just dairy that should be avoided when you have thrush. It is any carbohydrate that will turn into sugar. The basic rule is avoid anything that is WHITE. I had a rampant case of thrush for 6 months during and after radiation that just would not clear up regardless of the meds. I finally ran into a dentist that told me to avoid anything WHITE and was able to get rid of it. It's a yeast infection, it feeds on sugar which is also why your Nystatin needs to be made sugar free.

Just like Jim, a gallon every couple of days.
Are we saying that milk contributes to my getting the damn stuff?
Should I switch to soy to avoid the potential?

He had like a whithe moss growing on his gums. he got prescribed and antibiotic and it cleared in a week or less. they never advised us on foods to avoid, but I think they were more concerned about the weight at the time. Martin has not had thrush since (*touch wood*). but he brushes his teeth with special sensodyne and covers his teeth and gums with gel-kam every night.
Girlfriend to Martin 49 years old at diagnosis Diagnosed with SCC unknown primary June 2008. Cancer found in single node Stage N2A (3 to 6cm). Tonsilectomy 16th june, Radical modified neck dissection left side 30th june. 30 TX radiotherapy ended 9th October First comparative study scan came back clear
