Joined: May 2008 Posts: 43 | saw a news blip the other day cnbc or cnn about people taste tripping they called it where you eat this little fruit called a "Miracle fruit" grown in africa and florida and it makes your taste buds freak out , like makes a lemon taste like a sweet orange they said. They mentioned a study and use for oral cancer people.
Tonsil into base of tongue 3to4cm tumor. Giant lemon sized 9cm lymphnode. Squamos cell carcinoma
April 5 diagnosed. June 5 started treatment. Cetuximab Carboplatin Paclitaxel once a week for 6 weeks.Then 7 weeks of radiation plus chemo cisplatin then 4 weeks rest then neck disection was Nov 7 2008

Since posting this. UPMC, Pittsburgh, Oct 2011 until Jan. I averaged about 2 to 3 surgeries a week there. w Can't have jaw made as bone is deteroriating steaily that is left in jaw. Mersa is to blame. Feeding tube . Had trach for 4mos. Got it out April.

April 2006: Husband dx by dentist with leukoplakia on tongue. Oral surgeon's biopsy 4/28/06: Moderate dysplasia; pathology report warned of possible "skip effect." ENT's excisional biopsy (got it all) 5/31/06: SCC in situ/small bit superficially invasive. Early detection saves lives.

Age 58 at Dx, HPV16+ SCC, Stage IV BOT+2 nodes, non smoker, casual drinker, exercise nut, Cisplatin x 3 & concurrent IMRT x 35,(70 Gy), no surgery, no Peg, Tx at Moffitt over Aug 06. Jun 07, back to riding my bike 100 miles a wk. Now doing 12 Spin classes and 60 outdoor miles per wk. Nov 13 completed Hilly Century ride for Cancer, 104 miles, 1st Place in my age group. Apr 2014 & 15, Spun for 9 straight hrs to raise $$ for YMCA's Livestrong Program. Certified Spin Instructor Jun 2014.

Joined: Jun 2007 Posts: 5,260 | To me this sounds like a bunch of people that won't say I don't like it for fear that someone might say well, you are the only one because we all, even if there are in actuality only 2, and we thought it was great, LOL So I don't want to be the one looked down on and agree with the others. I'm not one that follows the croud and do all of my thinking for myelf.

This miracle fruit does exist and as a matter of fact my sister brought some home from one of her clients (she sells crop and nursery plant insurance) who wanted to try to help Bill. By the time we got this fruit, Bill was off everything by mouth during his treatment, but I tried them...little oval red berries the size of a peanut and they do work. Everything I tasted after eating just one was very sweet - very weird.
So, its not a myth and this client can not keep the plants nor the fruit in stock...they sell immediately.

TREATMENT START: 8/9/07 cisplatin/taxol X 7..IMRT twice daily X 31.5.
TREATMENT END: 10/1/07
PEG OUT: 1/08
PORT OUT: 4/09
FOLLOWUP: Now only annual exams. ALL CLEAR!

Joined: Sep 2006 Posts: 8,311 | As we all know we can each have different "results" from the same Tx but I really never lost my sweet taste and to this day it is the strongest and most reliable taste I have. Funny I was never a sweets eater pre Tx but now I see what I missed my whole pre TX life!!
I can't imagine what it would be like for me to eat one of those sweet enhancing berries.
