While I in no way condone living off the government which in reality is living off working people. There are so many abusers out there. I still have the compassion to understand some people need help at the low points in their lives. I read an article that said most smokers are lower income people so its no wonder alot of them get public assistance. Lets hope that the rising cost of cigarettes helps everyone quit smoking.
Working for a utility company, I talk to all kinds of people daily. Most of the lower income people who ask for help are the ones who know the system and play it to their advantage. The ones who cant pay their bills due to medicine costs and dont know about all the programs available to help are very sad. Some people are forced to choose which bill to pay or what is more important buying food or medicine. Many times the elderly women I have helped have broken down into tears when they find out they can get help to keep their phone turned on.

I have no idea how much a pack costs now.

Asking why she said that the 2 different ones were her's and she hadn't claimed in a few years as someone else had. So I asked why...did the other person pay their support in those years? and what about the ones she claimed last year? No she responded, she said that she knew she only needed 2 kids to max out on the Earned Income Credit (which is true) and that she has 6 so she "loans" her other kids to other people (for compensation I'm sure). She went on to say that since she hadn't claimed these 2 in a few years she thought she needed to just to keep them current in the IRS' computers.
Off I sent her and I'm sure she landed into the friendly arms of the Peoples Tax Firms.
BTW, with ANY 2 kids she was going to walk with over $8000 of tax free tax refund. So by finding the right 2 additional taxpayers those 6 kids will cost us $24,000 just in tax refunds each and every year until they are 17 or they start with their own "business".

April 2006: Husband dx by dentist with leukoplakia on tongue. Oral surgeon's biopsy 4/28/06: Moderate dysplasia; pathology report warned of possible "skip effect." ENT's excisional biopsy (got it all) 5/31/06: SCC in situ/small bit superficially invasive. Early detection saves lives.

No good deed goes unpunished type of thing.
