My name is Laurie and my husband Ace was diagnosed Thursday 3/5/09 with oral cancer. It has not yet even been a week, but that day feels like a year ago. He is 37 years old, never smoked.
I cannot find the appropriate words to express the gratitude I feel for the existence of all of the people on this board- especially Brian Hill. I downloaded the draft he put up and read it voraciously yesterday. I can say that our initial shock and disbelief is quickly morphing into an aggressive attack plan that was directly spurred by all the wisdom attained from this board. I got him an appointment with a specialist at Duke for next week, a step I probably would not have initially taken if only armed w/ the info from our local Doctor. I feel it answered many of the questions Ace had and was too scared to ask, as well as suggested questions to ask that we were not even aware of.
Today is his birthday and he is lying in bed scared and exhausted.
We have a 3 year old son. He is the same age that Ace was when his own dad died. Not related, but I know it has to be weighing heavily in his mind.
I am in nursing school, and I feel my instructors will be a great source of support and knowledge for us as we travel down this bitterly undesired road.

Okay, now that I got that out of my system, there are many on this board who will be of great assistance you you as far as what comprehensive cancer center you might want to consider.
It sure feels better when you have a plan, doesn't it. I can remember how encouraged I was 5 years ago to see the words "ActionCancer" in big bold letters on the side of our CancerCare Center.
Do you know any more about his cancer? Location? Size? Staging? That information will help the wise people from the board to offer the right counsel.

I found it about 2 years after my diagnosis and it has changed my life. The beginning is craziness because you have so many thoughts going through your head. I'm sorry you and your husband have the added stress of him losing his father. Although this cancer is not a death sentence, just like Donna said. I know it's hard and we are here for you!! Once you have more information maybe you can a signature line so we know the status of you and Ace. Has he checked out the forum at all? He may find it helpful. Unfortunatley there are many young people here...myself included. I look forward in helping you any way I can.

Welcome to OCF. Glad you took the time to read the 'draft copy'. Its an amazing piece of work that really digs deep into all the questions and helps give direction. That can be so helpful in a time when you dont know which way to turn. We are here to support you and of course yoru husband. Please feel free to ask questions.
Please have your husband do everything he wants now, which includes eating. As you have read, its a very long difficult road he will travel. Dont let cancer steal his time or energy away from him now. Eat like crazy and enjoy life to the fullest, things will change in a few weeks, so for now live it up.

I am glad that you found OCF as quickly as you did as well! I am a youngin as well..much younger 23. I am in remission and I have been clear for over 2 months. It was a hard battle but I know that he can get through this with your help! Best of luck to you both!

I am 10 months post treatment. Welcome to the site. Very glad to hear that your husband will be seen at at CCC next week. Good job!
I'll look forward to seeing the full diagnosis and may be able to comment in more detail based on my own experience. Hang in there. As others have stated, cancer is not a death sentence.
Tell Ace to eat as much as he wants right now. Don't worry about gaining a few pounds.

Age 58 at Dx, HPV16+ SCC, Stage IV BOT+2 nodes, non smoker, casual drinker, exercise nut, Cisplatin x 3 & concurrent IMRT x 35,(70 Gy), no surgery, no Peg, Tx at Moffitt over Aug 06. Jun 07, back to riding my bike 100 miles a wk. Now doing 12 Spin classes and 60 outdoor miles per wk. Nov 13 completed Hilly Century ride for Cancer, 104 miles, 1st Place in my age group. Apr 2014 & 15, Spun for 9 straight hrs to raise $$ for YMCA's Livestrong Program. Certified Spin Instructor Jun 2014.
