Age 58 at Dx, HPV16+ SCC, Stage IV BOT+2 nodes, non smoker, casual drinker, exercise nut, Cisplatin x 3 & concurrent IMRT x 35,(70 Gy), no surgery, no Peg, Tx at Moffitt over Aug 06. Jun 07, back to riding my bike 100 miles a wk. Now doing 12 Spin classes and 60 outdoor miles per wk. Nov 13 completed Hilly Century ride for Cancer, 104 miles, 1st Place in my age group. Apr 2014 & 15, Spun for 9 straight hrs to raise $$ for YMCA's Livestrong Program. Certified Spin Instructor Jun 2014.

My husband had his first SCC (tongue, Stage 1) when he was 28 (July 2006) - they had to remove it the day after my son was born, and they let all three of us share one room! Found mets to right nodes (8 of them positive) in Jan. 2008 and did a radical neck dissection followed by cisplatin and RT to both sides of the neck. A new tumor just formed (Dec. 2008) on the left side of his neck - this one is big - 6mm to start - so they have to do carbo/taxol/ Erbitux and rt first, and surgery will come in about 2 months. After three weeks of treatment, it has shrunk more than half. Joe never smoked, barely drank, never chewed, and did not have HPV. | | | | | Joined: Dec 2008 Posts: 8 Member | | Member
Joined: Dec 2008 Posts: 8 | I don't have any of the risk factors either...never smoked, hardly drink. I haven't yet been tested for HPV, so that will be interesting. I did however have an accident when I was a kid, playing on the foundations of the house my parents were building. I tripped, fell on my face and bit into my tongue badly enough to need stitches. In all the years since, it's occasionally had a irritated, itchy sensation in it. My ENT felt this trauma to the tongue 'could' be the factor that caused the SCC. Hard to know.
Diagnised 29th Oct 08 (29 years old): SCC, T2N1 - partial glossectomy (25%); flap construction (twice - first one died); neck dissection 8 nodes removed, 1 node positive; trache - 14 days, partially collapsed lung. No radiation at this time.

Since posting this. UPMC, Pittsburgh, Oct 2011 until Jan. I averaged about 2 to 3 surgeries a week there. w Can't have jaw made as bone is deteroriating steaily that is left in jaw. Mersa is to blame. Feeding tube . Had trach for 4mos. Got it out April.

Recurrence June/07 died July 29th/07.
