Joined: Sep 2006 Posts: 8,311 | Just saw a program last night that had a small segment on nano technology in the fight against cancer. It describe some work being done where they have developed nano diamond particles that they group together and coat with a drug and then attach protein branches that bypasses normal cells but are able to attach themselves to the protein receptors found on (some or all?) cancer cells. Once attached the cancer cells absorb the drug coated particle into the cell and it then dies.
Very interesting.
Who thinks of these things??

Stephanie, 23, SCC on the right side of my tongue, surgery on 5-19-08, over half my tongue removed, free flap constructed from my forearm, bilateral neck dissection, one positive node. Radiation (32) and chemo (carboplatin) started on 6-16-08. Recurrence 4/09 in lungs.

Really.
He is working with nanotechnology, hoping to develop a - dare I say it? cure for breast cancer.
His previous assignment was at Livermore National Laboratory, but he is now an assistant professor of mechanical engineering at Georgia Tech.
I understand he also has a lab where he can continue his research.

Marginal mandibulectomy 6/17/08 resulted in DX of Stage I SCC - gingiva (3 mm) right mandible, buccal side. Clear margins. Occasional social drinker. Smoked last cigarette in 1979. Clear pet: 12/08; 7/20/09. Yay!

My nephew Tod got a PHD in Applied Physics from Stanford University - 2002 (paid for, full boat), worked there, then got a job at Lawrence Livermore National Lab in Calif., but felt a bit hampered in his research because, well, it was a government facility. He began looking for work & was offered jobs at Harvard, USC., and Ga. Tech. He is now an assistant professor of Mechanical Engineering at Georgia Tech. He took Georgia because the school gave him the freedom to set up his own lab & continue his cancer research. Here is the "background" blurb on the Georgia Tech school of engineering website. "Dr. Sulchek developed improvements for high-speed atomic force microscopy before focusing on measurement in biological systems. Dr. Sulchek started at Georgia Tech in June 2008 as an Assistant Professor. Prior to his current appointment, he was a staff scientist at Lawrence Livermore National Lab. "Todd Sulchek" "cancer" gets you to his earlier work.
