You are absolutely correct about checking with one's doctor. In my case, I had good blood results so just went for it, knowing that at least my blood was normal (grin). | | |

Joined: Nov 2002 Posts: 3,552 | Nelie you have my sympathy! I was a classified school district employee many years ago and I was sick constantly. When they laid me off I hardly ever got sick. Those kids have some wicked viruses.
I've never gotten a flu shot and I rarely get the flu, but I work at home and don't come in contact with many people. I also am careful to wash my hands when coming back from public places.

Joined: Jan 2004 Posts: 316 | Hi all, The first time I had a flu injection (19 years old), it was from the recommendation of my 'then' GP. (I'd had a few episodes of bronchial pneumonia from the age of two years old). After that injection I was laid low with colds/flu, for the whole year. So, I was rather wary of having another one. This year I was advised to have a flu injection - I'm 2.5 years since last radiotherapy Tx - and I have had 3 to 4 colds/chesty infections in the space of 3 months! All during my radiotherapy and other appointments I travelled on buses, in cars with other people sniffing, sneezing and coughing, plus being in waiting rooms surrounded by others with colds/flu, and I never became ill. It amazed me (and others) how I did't catch any cold/flu, albeit with a compromised immune system! I don't know if it's only me, but I did dread having another flu injection this year in case I would have a dose of a cold or flu. Well, I'm still battling on with a few 'colds'  I'm never having another shot again!...just my experience... Cheers! Tizz

Joined: Jun 2006 Posts: 82 | Not only am I exposed every day to college students, I also have a 7 month old daughter in daycare with some wicked germs. I was just joking with my husband that she had a cold for 24 hours 1 1/2 weeks ago, and we still are battling it.
I will probably get the shot, but I just wanted to know what others thoughts were. Like a said earlier, I already checked with my MO and he was neither opposed to me having it or telling me that I needed it. His exact words were,, "Go about doing routine things like you have done in the past". My conflict was that I never had one in the past. I pressed him on it and he said, "It probably wouldn't be a bad idea".
Like I said, a lukewarm response at best.
DX on 05/01/06 with SCC of right tongue. 05/11/06 surgery-tumor 1.2cm & 4 cm clear margins & parital glos. & neck dissection with removal of 34 nodes/1 positive at 4mm)T1N1MO
35 IGRT & 3 cycles of chemo (1 cisplatin & 2 carbo-complete on 8/9/06.

Joined: Aug 2006 Posts: 167 | I had read online 'not' to have flu shots (too close to treatment) as it can actaully give you a virus.
I asked the chemo dr's nurse and she said as far as she knows he's oking flu shots. (I'm going to confirm this when the shots come out.)
We'll also ask the RO when we see her in mid Nov; however I too find they don't seem to say much.
My Dad (Sam) at age 69 dx SCC Base of Tongue T1N2C Well-Diff - March 2006.
35 IMRT rads & 3 Cisplatin chemos - Apr-June/06. Nodes shrunk 50% Dr's suggest ND. Negative PET - he declined ND.
March/07 Had Bilateral ND. No Cancer!! Doing Well!

Joined: Feb 2005 Posts: 2,019 | I just got some info. from the nurse who runs the health clinic at our school (they will be offering vaccines this year). Apparently there are two types of vaccines. One, the one that can be sprayed nasally, contains a live form of the virus. The other, the shot, does not and is administered to people with immune deficiencies all the time. There is no chance you can actually get the flu from it. There is more info. on this here: http://www.cdc.gov/nip/publications/VIS/vis-flu.pdf Knowing this, although it can't hurt to check with your MO anyway, I'd recommend getting the vaccine. Nelie
