Hi Everybody,

My father was diagnosed for tongue cancer stage III in Feb. this year. He has surgery to dissect the affected portion of tongue and had 3 lymph nodes removed. After that he took radiation and is still recovering.

Recently, like 10-15 days back, he saw some glands (around 8-10) around his lower check region to neck region. Any idea what they are? Are they the side effect of radiation? I am worried as they appeared recently and radiation was completed 4 months back.

Your suugestion and advice are appreciated.

Thanks,

Krishna

krishna, He needs to have them checked out ASAP. But I,m not sure I understand what you mean by he saw some glands? Were they enlarged and he could feel them? Was that area radiated?

Thanks david for your response. Yes the area was radiated and the glands were enlarged. We contacted the physician who did the surgery and he suggested biopsy of a gland.

We are worried and waiting for the test results. Praying to god that everything comes normal.

Thanks,

Nav

Krishna,
I am very sorry to hear about your father. "Salvage" surgery is one option they may give him as well as chemotherapy.

Gary,

How dangerous is this recurrence? Please advice me what is the survival rate? Do we need to go ahead with PET scan? Doctor is going to decide treatment based on biopsy report.

Thanks,

Krishna

Krisna,
It is always very serious to have a recurrence in the first year, especially so soon after radiation. Others here have survived such recurrences so do not give up hope.

A PET scan this soon may give false positives due to scar tissue -an MRI may be a better diagnostic choice.
