Maybe Gary and I can figure out a way to make soup and ship it to all the "who me- cook? wimps out there. We could send the profits to OCF, which by the way could use a few more donations- a bunch of small ones could work wonders. Amy

"Who me cook?" Yes, a wimp for sure, thats me!!

However, Amy makes it all sound sooooooo simple. Maybe even I could give it a try. Got to print this page off for future reference. Its a food of love thing going on...I've gotta try this chicken soup recipe for myself. Thanks Amy & Gary!!

My husband is the cook at our house, and he does all of the above, but at the end adds matzoh balls. His grandmother was Jewish and his mother passed along the chicken soup recipe. BIG favorite at our house. Matzoh balls are good filler uppers as well, tender and easy to swallow.

Once I began to be able to swallow again following my treatments, I lived on matzo ball soup for well over a year. I would go to the local deli and buy 3 to 4 quarts of the stuff every couple of days and eat it for both lunch and dinner. People at the office were amazed that I could eat the same thing every meal, every day. But heck, it had enoug bulk to fend off the hunger and tasted pretty good. Then, when I would travel, I would pack a few quarts of it in a cooler bag and take it with me on airplanes and always take a little thermos of it to eat on the plane.
I have to tell you, now that I can eat most anything, I rarely eat the stuff, even at the deli, but I don't know how I would have gotten by without it.

For the faint hearted in the kitchen- here is a quick and easy broth to make and then add whatever you like: In a large pot put
4 cups water,3 ribs of celery with leaves- coarsly chopped, 4 bullion cubes[EITHER beef or chicken],1 peeled and chopped carrot, 1 onion chopped and simmer for 20 minutes. Keep or puree or discard the veggies[your choice] After this stage you can add spinach, green beans, peas, corn [any canned, fresh or frozen veggie you like]
and\or add canned chicken or skinless chicken breasts if you used chicken bulion cubes] If you used beef bullion, you can add left over pot roast or beef roast chopped, etc. You can add potatoes or rice or noodles or matso balls- then simmer until the additions are done.
Good things to have in your pantry: Swanson's Chicken broth and Swanson's Beef broth can make dry foods go down much easier. smile Cooking your own will stretch your food budget.Amy

Another good thing about making your own broth from scratch is that you can control the sodium content. Many of the canned broths (and bouillon cubes) can be particularly high in sodium.

All of these soup recipes are making me hungry!! Guess I'll have to go dump a couple cans of Boost down my tube after this. I'm currently 26 of 35 radiation treatments in, combined with Chemo. Had base of tongue surgery and neck dissection in February and reccurence in July. Had some issues getting into the site, but now that's fixed and so glad to get in and read and share. I love to cook (and eat) and just the other night I made soup stock very similar to JAM's, except instead of bullion cubes I used a chicken carcass from my wife's rotisserie chicken she fixed Wednesday, boiled it off for hours and strained it really well. It really looked (and smelled) great but just can't get it past the "razor blades" in my mouth and throat!! I just thank God that everyone "pushed the issue" with the peg tube. Took some getting used to but as of this past week it's becoming a great thing to have right now!! Looking forward to reading, sharing, and posting with everyone.

Steve, that soup you made will go down the peg- just puree the meat and veggies and make sure there is lots of liquid. Glad to hear you like to cook. Other change of pace things John "tube drinks" are tomato juice and thinned tomato soup, Concord grape juice, coffee, clamato juice and the shakes he concocts. It'll be tough for a while, but you will get through it. Amy
